Last Sunday we went to visit a walled garden near Loughrea, Co. Galway, called Woodville Walled Garden. Woodville House has a long and fascinating history, you can read about it here, connected to Lady Augusta and the nearby Coole Park in Gort. This garden, which, by 2005 was being used as a farm field, started its transformation that year, and nine years later is blossoming into something really, really beautiful, thanks to the vision of its owners; Marie the Head Gardener and the numerous volunteers.
They held “Snowdrop Day” there on the 8th of February; we didn’t manage to make that day, but went over the following day. Despite it being bitterly cold, the rain held off the entire time and we had a lovely walk and tour around the gardens.
There is a museum, cafe and little shop in the old stables. It is so well worth a visit, and we are already looking forward to going back in Spring and Summer to see how it has bloomed.
A true hidden treasure.
thank you so much for including the link to the history of Woodville gardens
I certainly enjoyed seeing all the pictures they showed.Linda
What a perfect day..sounds like my idea of heaven!
Lovely photo’s Emily. Do follow up with more visits through the seasons, you won’t be disappointed. Woodland full of bluebells in Spring. Many tulips to come and much more, and tea!
Lovely place and lovely photos!Must check this place out,it’s only down the road!
Aedin, I forgot that you were in Galway: so even closer than us!! It’s lovely for small ones to have a run around in, you would really enjoy it, especially as the weather gets warmer x
Oh we definitely intend on doing that Dorothy! Thanks for “introducing” us 🙂
Nicola, you would LOVE it: great planting ideas, and just peaceful and beautiful… might be a good day out for all of us over the summer??
Linda, More than welcome! I am looking forward to seeing it in full colourful glory 🙂
Do you know what I thought of immediately on seeing those gorgeous photos? That book The Secret Garden. Looks like a gorgeous place. And the dove!!!!!!!!!! Or is it an exotic pigeon?
WW, it’s a dove, that tall building was a dovecote, and these extraordinarily tame doves were wandering around!
And yes, it really would remind you of the Secret Garden… how I’ve wanted a walled garden since I read that book!!
Cool. I will go asap. Great pics.
Nuala, I’d wait another few weeks til things wake up a bit more: I think they are having a daffodil day or something? Anyway, I’ll let you know if anything is coming up… Oh and they have a FB page too x
